El Reno is the county seat of Canadian County, at the junction of I-40 and US-81 and on old Route 66. Canadian County is core STACK country, and its leases produce water that has to be hauled somewhere.
Choate serves El Reno from its Kingfisher Yard, 20 road miles north on US-81, about 35 minutes. The water goes to Choate-owned disposal: the nearest by road is Hennessey South SWD #1, 38 road miles and about 60 minutes away.

The crossroads matters
Two major highways meeting at El Reno means leases in almost any direction are reachable without long stretches of county road: I-40 east and west, US-81 north and south, and US-270 northwest toward Calumet and Watonga. For a loaded tanker, highway miles are the easy ones.
Longer runs, planned well
El Reno is farther from Choate's wells than towns in Kingfisher or Blaine County, so work here is planned rather than improvised. Hennessey South SWD #1, Pierce #1-34H and Choate SWD #1 are all around 40 to 40 road miles out. Because Choate owns them, the trip ends at a well that is expecting the truck.

Roads and seasons around El Reno
Spring is storm season here: the May 31, 2013 El Reno tornado was the widest ever recorded, 2.6 miles across, and dispatch watches the weather before sending trucks onto open roads. The North Canadian River runs along the north side of town, and heavy rain can close low crossings on the county roads near it. On I-40, strong crosswinds matter for tanker trailers on the open stretches west of town.

El Reno was founded in 1889 on the 98th Meridian and named after Fort Reno, the Army post established nearby in 1874. The fort later held German and Italian prisoners of war in World War II and is now home to a USDA grazinglands research laboratory. The town grew as a Rock Island railroad junction; the old depot now houses the Canadian County Historical Museum, and the Heritage Express Trolley runs downtown.
El Reno High School's Indians play in Class 5A, and the Lady Indians won back-to-back 5A basketball championships in 2024, with an unbeaten 28–0 season, and 2025. Redlands Community College, founded in 1938, and Canadian Valley Technology Center are both here.
The town calls itself the Onion Fried Burger Capital of the World, and the Fried Onion Burger Day Festival has filled downtown on the first Saturday in May since 1988. Johnnie's, Robert's Grill and Sid's Diner all serve the burger. Lake El Reno sits on the west side of town, and Hollywood has come calling: Rain Man, Elizabethtown and Stillwater all filmed scenes here.
